North American Rail status: Advanced estimated time of arrival of equipment at either an interchange point or final rail destination.
Also Notify Party
A second notify party to whom carrier sends its arrival notice advising of goods coming forward for delivery
Arrival at an In-transit Yard
Equipment has arrived at an in-transit railroad location other than the destination.
Arrival at Destination
Arrival at the final railroad yard / intermodal ramp shown on waybill.
Awkward Cargo
Cargo of an irregular shape or size or weight that cannot be transported in a standard container. Transport requires special equipment, such as a flat-rack container, open top container, or platform.
Bill of Lading
Bad Order
A rail freight car was loaded improperly, is mechanically defective, or has safety violations.
Bad Order Release
A rail freight car is reported released from bad order status and returned to service.
Bank Guarantee
Guarantee issued by a bank to a carrier to be used in lieu of lost or misplaced original negotiable bill of lading.
Barge
A flat vessel that transports containers along river ways from ocean port to river port.
Base Date Event
An event in the shipment lifecycle that is used as the baseline for setting the expected time criteria for a document.
Base Rate
A tariff term referring to ocean rate less accessorial charges, or simply the base tariff rate.
Bill of Lading
Official legal document representing ownership of cargo; negotiable document to receive cargo; contract for cargo between shipper and carrier.
Bill of Lading Print Delegation
The ability to establish a relationship with an associate, via the relationship manager, that will allow the associate to view and print B/L documents.

Cargo Nature
The classification of cargo based on the commodity to be loaded for special stowage arrangement. The cargo nature can be general, awkward, reefer, or dangerous.
Cargo Weight (Gross)
The total weight of the cargo including cargo packaging and dunnage.
Cargo Weight (Net)
The weight of the cargo excluding cargo packaging and dunnage.
Carrier Office Region
The geographical region from which the carrier has prepared and issued the invoice. All of the invoices selected for inclusion in one payment instruction must be from the same Carrier Office Region.
Certified True Copy
An official copy of the original invoice document provided by the carrier. This copy has the same legal validity as the original invoice, and may be used by the customer to settle outstanding charges. (CTC)
Chassis
A frame with wheels and container locking devices in order to secure the container for movement.
Clip-on Genset
Refrigeration equipment attachable to an insulated container that does not have its own refrigeration unit.

Confirmed
A booking confirmation status that indicates the booking is acknowledged with a firm acceptance.
Consignee
The individual or organization to which goods are shipped.
Consolidated B/L
B/L combined or consolidated from two or more B/Ls. A bill of lading that is composed of either one or more booking numbers or containers from different bookings.
Constructive Placement
The container was not placed at the point previously designated by the consignor or consignee and is placed elsewhere. The container is available for pickup and may be subject to demurrage.
Contact Person
The individual designated by a company as the primary contact person for the web-site.
Container
An ISO standard reusable metal unit in which merchandise is packed and shipped by vessel, truck, or rail. See Container Type.
Container Freight Station
The location where LCL cargos from different bookings and customers are consolidated into or discharged from containers. (CFS)
Container Load Plan
A document prepared to show all details of cargo loaded in a container, such as weight, measurement, markings, shippers, consignees, the origin and destination of goods, and the location of cargo within the container. (CLP)
Container Number
The unique identification of a container.
Container Seal
Metal strip and lead fastener used for securely locking freight car, truck or containers doors. Seals are numbered for recording and to provide an audit trail of the security status during the shipment.
Container Seal Number
A number assigned to the seal for recording and tracking.
Container Size
The length and height of a container, usually 20, 40, 45 or 53 feet in length. Standard height is 8' 6\", high cube is 9' 6\".
Container Terminal
An area designated for the stowage of cargoes in containers; usually accessible by truck, railroad and marine transportation.
Container Type
Container classifications that adhere to ISO standards. For example, Flat-rack, General Purpose, and Reefer are container types.
Container Weight (Gross)
Entire weight of goods, packaging and container. The Cargo gross weight plus the empty container weight.
Container Yard
A handling and storage facility used for both full and empty containers. (CY)
Contract Number
A reference number for the contract.
Controlled Atmosphere
A type of reefer atmosphere in containers, in which the oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen concentrations, as well as the temperature and humidity, are precisely regulated to aid in the preservation of the cargo. (CA)

A non-negotiable duplicate of the Original bill of lading.
Copy Freighted Collect
A Copy bill of lading that has the collect freight information.
Copy Freighted Prepaid
A Copy bill of lading that has the prepaid freight information.

Credit
An arrangement for deferred payment of a loan, service or purchase given to a customer.

Cut-off Time
Latest possible time cargo may be delivered to vessel or designated point.

The term used by the International Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) for hazardous materials that are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, or property while being transported. (DG)
De-humidity
Used in reefer shipments, this sets a maximum humidity level in a container. Once the humidity level in a container reaches a specified percentage, the air is dried and humidity is removed. There is no control on the minimum humidity level. See Humidity.
Default Language
The language in which company name and address information is maintained in the web-site Company Profile. In addition to the default language, companies can also enter this information in their local language.
Demurrage
Charge applied for storing laden containers or cargo at a port, rail terminal, feeder terminal, depot or container yard after the free time has expired.
Departure
A rail status indicating that the container has departed on rail from the location.
Deramped
The container is taken off the rail flatcar.
Detention
Charge applied when the container is detained by the customer beyond the allowed time.
Digital Signature
The digital equivalent of a hand-written signature, and is the most secure and reliable way of protecting and authenticating e-documents sent electronically over the Internet. Encryption
A process of transforming clear text (data in its original form) into cipher text (encryption out of a cryptogrpahic algorithum) for security or privacy.
Equipment Offered in Interchange
Interchange between two rail carriers. Equipment is made available by the sending carrier; the receiving carrier has not reported any movement.
ETA
Estimated time of arrival.
ETD
Estimated time of departure.
Export
Shipment of goods through a foreign customs barrier.
Export Declaration
A government document, completed by the shipper, permitting designated goods to be shipped out of the country. Also known as Shipper’s Export Declaration (SED).

File Identifier
Valid reference type for booking and shipping instructions request.
Filter
A pattern through which data is passed. Only data that matches the pattern is allowed to pass through the filter.
Final Destination
Consignee's facility, port or inland facility, where a shipment ends its movement. (FND)
Flag
The flag of the nation in which the ship is registered. A ship registers under the flag of a nation to gain conveniences in the areas of taxes, crew, and safety requirements.
Flash Point
The temperature at which certain cargo will produce flammable vapor. This information is required by IMDG standards for dangerous goods.
Flatcar Bad Order Released
A rail flatcar is reported released from bad order status and returned to service.

Stands for \"Free On Board\" which is a mercantile expression, defined by the International Chamber of Commerce in INCOTERMS, used in sale contracts denoting that goods have to be delivered by the shippers on board the vessel at a particular place at their cost and risk.
Forty-foot Equivalent Unit
A container size standard of measurement. One forty-foot container or two twenty-foot containers.
Forwarder
An agent who performs various services for shippers or consignees in the export or import movement of cargo.
Forwarder Reference
The forwarder's internal identification number, such as a purchase order, used to reference the cargo.
Freight
The price paid to the carrier for the transportation of goods or merchandise by sea from one place to another. Freight is also used to denote goods which are in the process of being transported from one place to another.
Freight All Kind
System whereby freight is charged per container, irrespective of nature of the goods.
Freight Forwarder
See Forwarder.
Fresh Air Exchange
The fresh air exchange system on a reefer removes harmful gases from reefers carrying sensitive perishable commodities. The fresh air vent is located on the reefer machinery end of the container. The fresh air vent is adjustable to accommodate a variety of cargo and chilled load operating conditions. The fresh air vent should be tightly closed when carrying frozen cargo.

File Transfer Protocol; the protocol used on the Internet for sending files.
Full Container Load
A container of goods with the shipper being responsible for packing and the consignee being responsible for unpacking the container at his premises. Customer shipment is based on exclusive use of the container.
Fumigation
Treatment with a pesticidal agent, in gaseous form, to disinfect.
A generating unit for the power supply to a reefer container. A clip-on generator set is mounted to the front of the reefer container and an under-slung generator set is mounted on the chassis.
Gross Tonnage
Applies to vessels, not to cargo. Determined by dividing 100 by the contents, in cubic feet, of the vessel's closed-in spaces. For example, vessel ton is 100 cubic feet.
Group Administrator
A web-site user authorized to maintain the profile of a User Group, and create and assign users to this profile.
Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System
An international goods classification system for describing and classifying goods moving in international trade under a single commodity code. Developed under the auspices of the Customs Cooperations Council (CCC), an international customs organization in Brussels, this code is a hierarchically structured product nomenclature containing approximately 5,000 headings and subheadings describing the articles moving in international trade. It is organized into 99 chapters arranged in 22 sections. Sections encompass an industry, for example section XI is Textiles and Textile Articles; chapters encompass the various materials and products of the industry, for example chapter 50 is Silk, chapter 55 is Manmade Staple Fibers and chapter 57 is Carpets.
High Cube
Any container which exceeds 8 feet 6 inches (102 inches) in height, usually 9 feet 6 inches.
Highway Arrival
North America Rail status: Highway arrival at a railroad intermodal facility.
Highway Departure
North America Rail status: Highway departure from final railroad/intermodal facility.
House B/L
B/L issued by a freight forwarder or consolidator covering a single shipment containing the names, addresses and specific description of the goods shipped. Under FMC-regulated trades a House B/L can only be issued by an NVOCC, not a Freight Forwarder.
House Bill of Lading
B/L issued by a freight forwarder or consolidator covering a single shipment containing the names, addresses and specific description of the goods shipped.
Humidity
Used in reefer shipments, this sets a minimum humidity level in a container. Once the humidity level in a container falls below a specified percentage, humidity is added. See de-humidity.

IMDG Code
International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code. The IMO recommendations for the carriage of dangerous goods by sea.
Import
Shipment of goods from a foreign customs barrier.
Import License
A document required and issued by some national governments authorizing the importation of goods into their individual countries.
Import Permit
Usually required for items that might affect the public health, morals, animal life, vegetation, etc. Examples include foodstuffs, feedstuffs, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, seeds, plants, and various written material. In some countries an import permit is the same as an import license.
Inbound
Direction of vessel or cargo going to port of discharge or final destination.
Inland Clearance Depot
A container freight station with customs clearance facilities.
Insulated Container
A container insulated on the walls, roof, floor, and doors to reduce the effect of external temperatures on the cargo.
Intended Arrival Date
The estimated vessel arrival date at last port of discharge specified by the customer.
Intended Sailing Date
The estimated vessel departure date at first port of load specified by the customer.
Intermodal
Used to denote movements of cargo or containers between different transport modes such as water, motor, rail, and air carriers.
Intermodal Interchange
North America Rail status: Final railroad delivery to another carrier mode for delivery.
Invoiced Company
This is the company that is responsible for settling the invoice charges. This is the company name that appears in the \"Invoice To\" block on the invoice.
North America Rail status: Delivery from one railroad to another railroad with no intervening highway movement.
Junction Received
North America Rail status: Railroad car received by one railroad from another with no intervening highway movement.

Letter of Indemnity
Guarantee from shipper or consignee to indemnity carrier for costs and/or loss, if any, in order to obtain favorable action by carrier. Sometimes, it is used to allow consignee to take delivery of goods without surrendering bill of lading which has been delayed or become lost (for straight consignment case).
Lighter
An open or covered barge towed by a tugboat and used mainly in harbors and inland waterways.
Marks & Numbers are placed on packages for export for identification purposes; generally a triangle, square, circle, diamond, or cross with letters and/or numbers and port of discharge.
MFAG Number
The name of the dangerouse cargo contained in the general index of IMCO Regulations book under technical names.
Milestone
A marked event in a series of event checkpoints along a shipment's route, each planned to occur on specific dates and times.
Modified Atmosphere
A condition required for some cargos shipped in reefer containers, in which the oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen concentrations are different from those in ambient air but are not precisely regulated. (MA)
Motor Carrier Arrival
North America Rail status: Railroad controlled arrival on motor carrier from intra-facility move.
Motor Carrier Move
North America Rail status: Container/trailer put on Railroad controlled truck delivery to an off-site intermodal facility in substitute service.
Original bill of lading endorsed by shipper passing the title to a bank or other recipient.
Net Explosive
A standard IMCO information requirement for explosive dangerous goods. Also called Black Powder Equivalent.
No Bill

Notify Party

Overdue
Overdue is the status assigned to a milestone that has not been completed by the expected time or a document that has not been uploaded by the expected date.
Packing requirements for dangerous goods during transport. Signified by a I, II, III denoting the severity of hazard and indicating packaging requirements on the type of packages and material.
Paid by
Customer designated as party paying for services. Also called Bill to Party.
Payment Instructions
A collection of invoices that have been grouped together for the purpose of creating a single payment reference.
Payment Instructions Reference Number
The serial number that is attached to a set of payment instructions upon creation. When settling payment, both the customer and carrier can refer to this number instead of the individual invoices.
Place of Delivery

Place of Receipt
Location where cargo enters the care and custody of carrier. The starting point of carrier’s liability where cargo is received from shipper and under carrier’s custody for transportation to final destination.

Pre-cooling
A process employed in the shipment of citrus fruits and other perishable commodities. The fruit is boxed and placed in a cold room from which the heat is gradually extracted. The cargo is then placed inside of a pre-cooled container.
Prepaid
A payment options where freight and charges are required to be paid by the shipper before an original bill of lading is issued.
Proper Shipping Name
The name of the dangerous cargo contained in the general index of IMCO Regulations book under technical names.

Relative Humidity
Percentage of the actual amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum it can hold at a given temperature, multiplied by 100.
Release from Hold Other than Bad Order
North America Rail status: Equipment reported released and returned to service.
Return of Rail Container / Trailer
Equipment has been returned to rail.
Roll-on / Roll-off
Specially constructed vessels with ramps that allow wheeled vehicles to be loaded and discharged without with use of a crane. Also called Ro/Ro.
Route
The manner in which a shipment moves; an established line of travel.
A special facility granted by a carrier under guarantee from shipper/consignee to release cargo without presenting the original bill of lading. Also called Express B/L.
Sea Waybill (Limited Regions)
A sea waybill that can be used as a B/L. A sea waybill limited regions is negotiable in some countries, not all countries. (SLR)

Shipper's Export Declaration
Service Contract
As provided in the Shipping Act of 1984, a contract between a shipper or a shippers' association and an ocean common carrier or conference in which the shipper makes a commitment to provide a certain minimum quantity of cargo or freight revenue over a fixed time period, and the ocean common carrier or conference commits to a certain rate or rate schedule as well as a defined service level, such as assured space, transit time, port rotation, or similar service features. The contract may also specify provisions in the event of nonperformance on the part of either party.
Service Contract Number
A reference number of a service contract.
Service Loop
A plan by a carrier to move cargo between two or more ports on a predefined route using ships owned by the carrier or others and adhering to published schedules available to the public.
Shipment Coverage
A web-site application that filters the visibility of shipments for users within a company or when sharing shipment information to an associate company through Relationship Manager. Shipment Coverage filters shipments based on a combination of the following criteria: Carrier, Party Type and Name(s), Origin-Destination pair(s), Cargo Type(s), and Traffic Mode.
Shipper
The company for whom the owners of a ship agree to carry goods to a specified destination and at a specified price. Also called Consignor.
Shipper Owned Container
A container that is owned by or provided by a shipper and used for a cargo shipment. The container is not owned by or leased by the carrier. (SOC)
Shipper's Export Declaration
A joint Bureau of the Census' International Trade Administration form used for compiling U.S. exports. It is completed by a shipper and shows the value, weight, destination, etc., of export shipments as well as Schedule B commodity code. (SED)
Shipper's Load & Count
Shipments loaded and sealed by shippers and not checked or verified by the carriers.
Shipping Instructions
Key information about a customer’s shipment used to generate a bill of lading. Also called bill of lading instructions. (SI)

Technical Name
The proper or complete name description for a dangerous commodity.
Terminal
An assigned area in which containers are prepared for loading into a vessel or are stacked immediately after discharge from the vessel.
Terminal Handling Charge
A charge assessed by the terminal or carrier for handling FCLs at ocean terminals.
Terminal Receiving Charge
Charge assessed by the terminal for cargo being delivered for export.
TEU

The total rate from the point of origin to final destination.
To Order
A type of consignee indication used on an original bill of lading that is negotiable. It is often used with a letter of credit or when the final consignee is not yet established.
Traffic Mode
A way of describing the relationship of cargo and the containers in a shipment. The traffic mode can be FCL (containers in the exclusive use of the customer), LCL (loose cargo; containers shared between two or more customers), or FCL+LCL (both containers and loose cargo in a single shipment).

Vessel Voyage
A trip by a specific ship over a defined route on a given date. The unique description of a vessel voyage includes: service loop, ship, voyage number, and direction.

Waybill
A document prepared by a transportation line at the point of a shipment; shows the point of the origin, destination, route, consignor, consignee, description of shipment and amount charged for the transportation service. A waybill is forwarded with the shipment or sent by mail to the agent at the transfer point or waybill destination. Unlike a bill of lading, a waybill is not a document of title.
